Small notes

 As I'm catching up on turning my notes into finished posts, I'd like to take down some thoughts; for myself as much as those reading:


All of the pictures from most of my early posts are broken, that's rough. I am not sure I remember what was what. I'll have to redo that. 
Note: Week 12 will also need pictures added, but the selection is so big that I'll publish it without them for now

The formatting in a lot of places is also bad. I only take some of the blame for that. Everything shifts so much between the edit-mode and the published version, and anything related to images is also very wonky to work with. Honestly I don't know when (and to what degree) I'll fix this. Maybe I'll change the theme?

I might want to change the font as well, and I'm considering splitting up the long posts.

Day 2

Not ready to spend the day hiking alongside my roommates, I stayed in and had a late breakfast. The weather was a lot nicer today; while there's always a cool wind blowing this close to the sea, today it was accompanied by sunshine. I decided to take the bus to Valetta, and potentially check out some recommended sights to see. The Upper Barrakka Gardens had my attention, so I headed straight for them. From there I got to enjoy a nice view, and really take in the sunshine. However I couldn't quite figure out if the ferry for the three-islands-tour was operating or not, so I chose to postpone the boat tour and lift ride till another day. I walked around the city a little, but found none of the tourist-attracting stores to be inviting. After grabbing pastizzi once more and sitting at the Triton Fountain for a bit, I took the bus back home to cut my day-trip short. Back at the hostel, I caught up on writing blog entries.

Week 14

Another quiet week. Tuesday was a public holiday, so the office was quite empty on Monday. On Thursday, we suffered a power outage. Fairly early on in the day, maybe 8:30 to 9am, everything went dark. Even the generator didn't seem to kick in. I was then given the background info, that this is not uncommon in the summer in Malta. Likely onset by the increase in fans and ACs running, the island cannot sustain its power usage. And while they are already being supplemented with power from Sicily, it seems even that is not enough. So sometimes there are outages that hit various parts of the island. In our case, the building block I'm in was hit, while the rest of MCAST seems to have been spared. A few people from my office ended up taking their work to the Administration building across campus, to finish off meetings there. I am not sure however, how much of the network would have been up, even there. We stayed without lights for a while, then went through a few different variants.

Arrival

I arrived at Malta international airport at about 12:40 on Friday the 4th. Knowing that the hostel I'd spend my first 3 weeks in had kindly informed me which bus would get me directly to where I needed to be, I checked the bus stop signs and the Tallinja app, distrusted my hostel's wisdom and waited. The bus slowly made its way through the thick traffic, and I got out at the completely wrong station to miss catching my transfer bus. So I walked randomly in the direction the busses left, found another bus stop, caught another bus, and eventually made my way to the correct bus stop that my original bus (the one the hostel had told be to use) would definitely have gotten me to. Quite beat, I arrived at the hostel and was handed a key by the hostess. After a short explanation I'd sorted out my belongings, precariously climbed and checked out my bed at the top of the bunk.
